Local Products Help Spark Sierra Women's Soccer

Sparked by a bevy of local talent, the Sierra College women’s soccer team is off to a good start to its 2012 season. Coached by former Oakmont High and Sacramento State standout Jason Gantt, the Lady Wolverines moved their record to 4-3-1 on the season by handily defeating outclassed Los Medanos, 8-1 on Tuesday. Gantt, now in his fourth season at the helm of the Sierra program, has upgraded the Lady Wolverines’ schedule this season as last weekend the Rocklin booters split a pair of matches in Southern California against Fresno City and Long Beach City. “The way the state power ratings work, a loss against a good team on the road will sometimes outweigh a win over a weaker team,” said Gantt. “We play in such a tough conference that we had to go out and help our power ratings.” On Friday, Sierra played at perennial state power Fresno City and despite receiving a goal from Caroline Stromick (Rio Americano), the Lady Wolverines fell, 2-1. However, on Sunday, Sierra rebounded with a 1-0 win over Long Beach City with a goal by Monet Filteau (Colfax) being the difference. Gantt, a former assistant men’s coach at Sacramento State, saw Marissa Griffin (Woodcreek) score four goals in Tuesday’s win over Los Medanos Mahannah (Antelope) added a pair of scores while Filteau and Stromick added one each. Sierra competes in the tough Big 8 Conference which this week had four of its schools – Santa Rosa, Modesto, Ameican River and Diablo Valley – all ranked in the NSCAA national Top 20 for JCs.
